How can Speech and Language Therapy help my child?
Speech and language therapy is fundamental to a child’s early development because communication underpins nearly every aspect of growth—from learning and relationships to emotional wellbeing. It helps children communicate more effectively by supporting their understanding, expression and ability to build meaningful relationships with the people around them
We support the following areas of development:
Building Communication Skills
-
Early interaction skills such as babbling, joint attention, eye contact, initiation and requesting.
-
Receptive language (understanding words, instructions, and questions)
-
Expressive language (using words, sentences, and gestures to communicate)
Enhancing Social and Emotional Development
-
Taking turns
-
Play skills
-
Understanding and communicating feelings and emotions
Supporting Learning and School Readiness
-
Vocabulary development
-
Listening and attention skills
-
Understanding of instructions
Speech and language therapy (SLT) plays a vital role in supporting children’s early development, particularly during the first five years of life when the brain is rapidly growing and highly responsive to learning. It focuses on helping children develop communication skills, which are essential for social interaction, learning, and emotional wellbeing.
How can Occupational Therapy help my child?
Occupational Therapy provides practical support to enable people to engage in daily activities that are important & meaningful to them.
Occupational Therapy (OT) helps children develop the skills they need for everyday life.
OT gives children practical support so they can develop their ability to take part in everyday activities more independently. It helps develop skills like coordination, strength and sensory processing, so children can play, learn and grow with confidence at home, in nursery and out in the community.
For young children, their “occupations” are things like playing, exploring, communicating, learning, feeding, and interacting with others. These early experiences are the building blocks for development.
OTs look at the whole child, as a holistic being, including how they process sensory information, regulate their emotions, move their bodies, and engage with the world around them.
In early childhood, sensory processing and regulation play a huge part in how children learn and communicate. When children feel calm, regulated and comfortable in their bodies, they are much more able to engage, play, and develop language. They can later develop skills essential to learning such as organisation, independence & confidence.
Through play-based activities and carefully designed sensory experiences, we can support children to:
• Develop sensory processing and regulation skills
• Improve attention and engagement
• Build confidence in exploring and playing
• Support early communication and interaction with others and the world around them
• Strengthen the foundations for learning and development
